Brian
🐕 Border Collie CrossYoung1 yearMaleNational
Brian is a medium-sized 1 year old male Collie Cross who cannot live with cats, but he can live with larger dogs. He can live with children aged 12 and over, and he is currently based in Cheshire.
Brian is highly stressed in the kennel environment and his reactive behaviours have become worse.
Brian accepts a collar, harness and lead and becomes very excited to go out for walks. He can be nervous on walks which can cause him to be a little skittish especially around sudden movement or other dogs particularly if they approach suddenly or unexpectedly but he is learning very quickly that there is nothing to be afraid of.
He walks well and loves to sniff around at all the new smells. Treats and praise encourage him lots to keep going when in a “scary situation.” Due to his young age he can get over excited on walks which can cause him to pull but he responds well to no and will stop.
His walks are getting better day by day and you can tell he definitely looks forward to them.
Brian can be nervous of new people which can cause him to be fearful and bark and growl at them when first arriving, he needs very slow introductions and time to adjust to new people however he does settle after he feels safe. Brian does seem to prefer male company.
Once settled, Brian is a very affectionate boy who loves lots of attention and cuddles, he thrives off human attention and needs lots of reassurance from his favourite people when he is feeling sad or scared.
Brian has been introduced to lots of new visitors since being in his new home and has been amazing with them. Due to Brian’s reactive behaviours he will need a child free home.
Brian is a typical puppy at heart and has a very playful nature. He loves his toys especially rope toys and heavy chewing toys and can be found dancing around and keeping himself busy with them.
Brian does show guarding behaviours around his food with the other dogs, he however doesn’t display this around people once settled and this can be easily managed by keeping him separated while eating.
Brian is toilet trained and crate trained although after being in kennels he will likely need a bit of refresher training. He has never been destructive and can be left alone for up to 4 hours with no issues. He also sleeps well overnight, he can whine initially but stops very quickly and is quiet for the remainder of the night.
Brian is very food orientated and loves all kinds of food and treats which is very good for his training. Brian does suffer with car sickness which can cause him to drool and be very anxious in the car, his family did work on this with him however not much progress was made.
Brian has been good with people that he’s met while at the kennels and greets them with a hug, he reacts in his kennel when people walk past but this is more out of frustration as he wants you to get him out of his kennel.
He is a very lovely and energetic boy and would require an active home where he can go on lots of walks and have training and enrichment so he can use his brain, due to the collie in him he would be best suited to someone who has experience with the breed.
He can go on group walks without reacting but if a dog reacts to him he will react back and he has attempted to redirect while reacting.
He hasn’t been introduced to any dogs yet, he does try to play with them through the fence so we will work towards introducing him to someone and see how he gets on as some dogs he instantly reacts to and others he starts to play with.
The kennel staff say, “Brian is a lovely boy, with so much potential. He’s only young, and needs someone who can put in the training with him.
He’s very stressed in kennels, which makes working with him a lot harder as he’s already over threshold when coming out. He’s met lots of new people at the kennels, and really does just love a cuddle. He’s a big baby who has a lot of energy so will need an active home with someone who can give him the time and patience he needs.
Brian needs someone who has experience in managing his behaviours. He is reactive in his kennel to dogs going past, and was reactive to staff when first arriving.”
