Merlin

Merlin is a medium-sized boy who cannot live with cats or children, but he can live with female dogs. He is currently based in Cheshire. Merlin is a neutered male dog who is fully vaccinated and microchipped. He is not currently on any medication. Merlin has a calm demeanour when strangers visit the home, often ignoring them in favour of a walk. He may show excitement and jump up when greeting familiar people. Merlin has displayed resource guarding tendencies, particularly with food and his owner. He is fed separately from the smaller dog in the home to prevent food theft and used to protect “high value” treats, though this behaviour has improved since such treats were removed from his routine. He has also shown possessiveness over his owner, particularly in interactions with her new partner, though he eventually accepted him. Merlin accepts a collar, harness, and lead without issue. On walks, he demonstrates strength but remains generally calm and checks back with his handler. While walking, he showed excitement upon seeing a German Shepherd, which escalated into lunging and barking, accompanied by a slight growl and a curled lip. Merlin is toilet-trained but not crate-trained. He has never been destructive and can be left alone without issues, he spends two days a week unattended from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Overnight, he sleeps well in his safe space under the stairs. While Merlin travels well in a vehicle, he tends to wander. A strong restraint or boot guard would be needed for safe car travel. Merlin enjoys walks, tug-of-war, teddies, food, attention, and grooming. He has gained weight due to reduced exercise following his owner’s back injury, and he would benefit from increased activity. He dislikes cats, children, hosepipes, sprinklers and visits to the vet where he experiences stress in waiting rooms, especially around other animals, and is muzzled as a precaution. Merlin is a high-energy dog who can be playful and gently mouths arms when excited.
